Call for Volunteers! Role-play exercise for primary school students: “Young Ambassadors”

The School is seeking volunteer parents to support the role-play exercise "Young Ambassadors". The aim of the game is to familiarise students of EEB III with the decision-making process in the EU and to illustrate positive impact of the EU on their life. The game was prepared by parents who are familiar with the topic and the decision-making process from their work experience. It was played last year for the first time in P4 classes with considerable success. The exercise will be held in P4 classes this year also in the period from April-May2019. The exercise will be done for each class in the first language/mother tongue in three (non-consecutive) class sessions.

The EU legislation on the reduction of use of plastic bags will be used for the role-play exercise. It is an excellent example for several reasons: easy to understand and very concrete. In addition, it shows EU initiative and action in a very important area for our future, the environment.

The material was adapted for P4 pupils. It was developed with the support and encouragement of the Director, Ms Malik, the parents’ association and the teachers of P4. The parents’ association supported the translation from EN to the different languages.

The material includes

- a students’ pack: Brief Game Description + National Negotiating Position

- a teachers/parents’ pack: Fact sheet, Extended Game Description, PowerPoint presentation

Each class will need the support ofthe teacher and at least two volunteer parents. One parent will play the role of the Presidency and will chair the meeting. One parent will play the role of the European Commission. The teacher will help steer students and support them during the exercise. The parents should be available for all three academic hours. A brief training session will be organised with the team that prepared the game. Some prior knowledge of EU decision making and in particular Council meetings is desirable.
