In June 2021 the four APEEEs of the ES Brussels launched a survey to gather the parents’ views on the key priorities for the future Secretary-General, the profile she/he should have and the key success factors she/he would need to manage in the role.

On 12 August 2021, the four Presidents of Brussels APEEEs followed up with a joint letter addressed to the Chair of the Board of Governors of European Schools. They shared the outcome of the survey along with some reflections and suggestions. Similar letters were sent to the European Commission and to the Chair of the European Parliament's CULT Committee.

In her response, the Commission's DG for Human Resources and Administration, Ms Gertrud Ingestad welcomed this initiative on behalf of the Commission and provided some clarification about the points that had been raised.

On 31 August 2021, Mr. Andreas Beckmann was selected by the Board of Governors as the new Secretary-General of European Schools.
