Background information - Survey on mobile phone policy for EEB3
Information on the school’s current mobile phone policy as well as those of some of the other European Schools
EEB3 current mobile phone policy:
Primary: According to B3-Politique-téléphone-EN.pdf (eeb3.eu), pupils are advised not to take their mobile s to school. However, if they need to use their mobile phone before or after school, they may bring them to school, but they must remain switched off during school hours. are not allowed to use them at any time of the school day.
Secondary: According to the https://www.eeb3.eu/app/uploads/2023/02/B3-Good-Behavioural-Policy-Secondary-Cycle-EN-Final-06.02.2023.pdf, using a mobile phone, a smartphone at school is considered unacceptable behaviour. The same applies for inappropriately using a mobile phone, a smartphone on school premises or during school activities, or in class when this is not allowed by the teacher as a class support tool or for research purposes. EEB III also has an ICT Charter for Pupils: B3-IT-Charter-EN.pdf (eeb3.eu) explaining rules for safe use of IT devices at school. Concretely, pupils in secondary are allowed to use their mobile phones for personal purposes only in outdoor areas (such as the courtyard and cafeteria), the Cervantes room and the library. Using mobile phones and smartphones inside other school buildings is currently prohibited. Teachers may allow pupils to use their mobile phones for educational activities in secondary.
EEB I policy:
No mobile device use in class, only when expressly requested by the teacher for an educational purpose.
S1-S3: “Bus to Bell” principle: mobile device in the school bag during the whole school day, except when use is requested by teachers.
S4-S7: Use of mobile devices is authorised in designated areas only (cafeteria, library, some restricted outdoor areas)

Only a reasonable use of the phone is tolerated. It is strictly prohibited at all times to film, take, distribute or share pictures on school premises.
Mobile phones are forbidden in: classrooms (except for educational purposes with the teacher’s permission), changing rooms, canteen, cafeteria during meals, S1-S3 preau (except for consulting school info), S1-S3 chill& study room.
Mobile phones are authorised: outside school buildings (for checking information, sending messages and making urgent calls), corridors (for quick look at timetable or school info), library (for silent schoolwork), cafeteria (outside mealtimes) , courtyard S1-S3 for consulting school info, courtyard S4-S7, study room S4-S7 (for silent schoolwork).

Secondary: Use of mobile phones is forbidden in all indoor areas, except in the chill-out room. Taking pictures and videos is not allowed. Calling or receiving calls is not allowed. If the pupil needs to contact parents, they must do it in the office of the educational advisor with permission.
Munich school policy:
S1-S3: Only accompanied use of the mobile device is allowed. Therefore, if a supervisor or teacher does not specifically allow use, the mobile device is to be kept silent or turned off. Permission may be granted for educational reasons during lessons or at for a justified reason, e.g. in the event a student urgently needs to write a message to their parent.
S4-S7: an unaccompanied mobile device use is considered reasonable. This permission explicitly does not apply to activities that produce noise (such as playing music or videos) and playing computer games.
Frankfurt school policy:
Students in S1 to S3 are not permitted to use their mobile devices anywhere in the school unless supervised by a teacher or supervisor who explicitly allows it. If no permission is given, mobile devices must be kept in the lockers. Wi-Fi access is not provided by the school's network.
Students in S4 are allowed to use their mobile devices in the following areas and times: courtyard, study rooms, library, but only as notebooks; the classroom, but only when authorized by the teacher and as part of the instructional process. Wi-Fi access is not provided by the school's network.
S5-S7 students: Only devices capable of connecting to the school's secure Wi-Fi network will be allowed. Students will use devices for educational purposes only. Inappropriate software or applications, including social media, gaming, and entertainment, must not be accessed during school hours. Access to the school's Wi-Fi network will be provided for registered devices. Devices should be used to support and complement classroom instruction and assignments as directed by teachers. n the canteen, device usage is allowed outside lunch periods, with the explicit exception of activities that produce noise, such as playing music, videos, or computer games.
