Roles and responsibilities of parents and students

Role of the parents

Parents are expected to:

  • Read the  Rules of behaviour for students on the bus and review it with their child
  • Oversee the safety of their child on the way to and from the bus stop (it is recommended that students up to the age of 10 should be accompanied on the way to and from the stop)
  • Ensure that the child arrives at the stop five minutes in advance of the scheduled arrival of the bus
  • Reimburse any damages suffered if their child damages the property/school bus
  • Help the child to memorise his or her address and telephone number
  • Inform the transport office in case of any difficult or dangerous situation on the route
  • Behave in a courteous and respectful manner

Role of students

The student must read and accept the Rules of behaviour for students on the bus.

The responsibilities of the student with regard to safety and surveillance on the bus journey are set out below. The full set of rules for students can be consulted on the website at  Reglement Elèves dans le bus.doc, or in the transport office.

In particular, the students must:

While waiting for the school bus:

  • Always be at the stop five minutes in advance of the scheduled arrival of the bus
  • Wait until the bus is at a complete halt before approaching the vehicle
  • Queue up quietly and climb onto the bus one at a time and holding on to the handle

On board the school bus:

  • Choose a seat quickly, remain seated and attach his or her seatbelt for the duration of the journey
  • Speak quietly and not eat, drink or leave any rubbish on the bus
  • Always follow the directions of the bus driver
  • Behave in a courteous and respectful manner
  • Keep head and arms inside the bus at all times
  • Be aware of the emergency exits and only use them in case of emergency
  • Not throw anything out of the windows

On leaving the school bus

  • Wait until the bus is at a complete halt before leaving his or her seat
  • Leave the bus one at a time, without pushing, and holding on to the handle
  • Move away from the bus to a safe distance as soon as they are off the bus, in order to allow the driver to see him or her and to be sure that the student is not in a potentially dangerous situation
  • Keep to a safe distance when crossing in front of the bus, and wait for the driver’s signal before crossing carefully and without running

On arriving at school

Students should report any problem or dangerous situation experienced on the bus to a responsible adult.
