ABOUT THE FILM
Surplus: Terrorized Into Being Consumers is a 2003 Swedish documentary directed by Erik Gandini which explores consumerism and globalization. This award-winning film delves into capitalism and technology and examines the extent to which they have brought us greater efficiency, more leisure time and less work. According to the movie, these promises remain unfulfilled. Is this the case? How have our lives evolved in the 15 years since the movie was made? How else could we live?

Join us for the film and a discussion with other interesting teens after.

ABOUT THE EVENT
Modern economists base their theories on the idea that we are all money-hunting, selfish, and competitive. They assume we are dedicated to working and piling up wealth to protect ourselves from poverty and unemployment. But is this true? Is it wrong for companies and the government to try to convince us that not earning lots of money means failure? What does having money bring us?
Economist Peter Fleming will be discussing what the value of work actually is and what kind of person we should be – whether at work, in the classroom, at university, or beyond. Join us at Muntpunt Library for this fascinating insight into economics and its impact on our lives.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER
Peter Fleming is Professor of Business and Society at Cass Business School, City University London. He researches the changing politics of relations between employees and employers, and has a popular Guardian column on the topic. He has also written for several journals and magazines on the changing relationship between business and society, with special emphasis on new patterns of conflict in the workplace and the causes behind corruption at work.
