Work Experience (WEX) to CERN for the Secondary students of EEB3

Dear students,

We are pleased to announce that our cooperation with CERN continues for the second year. The Centre Européen pour la Recherche Nucléaire (CERN) is the European research organization that operates the largest particle physics laboratory in the world.

CERN's main function is to provide the particle accelerators and other infrastructure needed for high-energy physics research – as a result, numerous experiments have been constructed at CERN through international collaborations.

Scientists, engineers, IT specialists, human resources specialists, accountants, writers, technicians and many other kinds of people are working together to break barriers to achieve the seemingly impossible.

On July, 14th 2015, the LHCb experiment at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider has reported the discovery of a class of particles known as pentaquarks. The collaboration has submitted a paper reporting these findings to the journal Physical Review Letters.

“The pentaquark is not just any new particle,” said LHCb spokesperson Guy Wilkinson. “It represents a way to aggregate quarks, namely the fundamental constituents of ordinary protons and neutrons, in a pattern that has never been observed before in over fifty years of experimental searches. Studying its properties may allow us to understand better how ordinary matter, the protons and neutrons from which we’re all made, is constituted.”

CERN agrees to accept students from European School Brussels III for an one week working experience program (WEX) from 21.02 to 25.02.2022 (school vacations).

The program will be online during the whole week.

The aim of this programme will be to introduce the students to the world of particle physics: our basic knowledge about the fundamental constituents of matter and the forces between them, the open questions, how research is conducted in an international research centre, the tools and methods used, the ideas for the future, the applications for society.

The program contains Virtual Visits, Masterclasses, Data Analysis, Presentations from Scientists, ...

It will be a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn about science, to meet famous scientists and to understand the way that Scientists, engineers, IT specialists, human resources specialists, accountants, writers, technicians and many other kinds of people work together at CERN for the humanity.

The program is addressed to S5, to S6 and to S7 students, and is proposed to 21 students.

The CERN team will apply the following selection criteria for the final list of students.

  1. Marks on physics, mathematics and ICT.
  2. Participation in Labo physics or Advance Maths.
  3. Participation in other school projects ex: ESSS, CanSat, ICT Olympiads, eeb3 green, Maths Olympiads or other scientific experiments / experiences.
  4. Variety of all the sections of the school.

In the case of students with the same evaluation, the CERN team will give positions randomly.

If you are interested in participating in the first online CERN’s working experience week (from Monday 21th to Friday 25th, February 2022) please express your interest by sending your motivation letter and all the necessary certificates or documents to WEX email address:

IXL-WORK-EXPERIENCE@eursc.eu

Deadline for application: January 28th, 2022 at midday.

At the end of the program the students will receive a certificate if they apply the following:

  1. Full participation in the training week.
  2. Complete all the assignments that will be given from scientists or teachers.

We are at your disposal for any questions. Kind regards,

Georgios CHRISTOFI Theodosia ANTONIADOU Catherine HODARA-MICOLIER
