World Food Safety Day
7 June 2019
Dear Parents,
On Friday, 7 June 2019 we will celebrate the first World Food Safety Day. The United Nations has declared this day to draw global attention to the health consequences of contaminated food and water.
The Canteen WG wishes to participate in celebrating the World Food Safety Day by spreading the word about safe food practices and communicating on some essential food safety measures taken at our school canteen.
Food can become contaminated at any point during preparation, production and distribution. Everyone along the production chain, from producer to consumer, has a role to play to ensure the food we eat does not cause diseases.
When working in a school canteen, one has to keep food safety in mind at all times. In our school canteen, we take food safety very seriously and seek to ensure full compliance with the applicable rules. A few of the measures taken include, inter alia:
- Purchase and storage of raw materials on a weekly basis to ensure storage and transport in a cold room at constant temperature.
- Good hygiene plays a major role in keeping foods safe for children to eat. Canteen staff are required, inter alia, to always wash their hands before touching food, before and after preparing meals, and after serving pupils.
- Applying HACCP standards throughout the production process.
- Applying hygiene standards when distributing meals to pupils (wearing gloves, non-interruption of service temperatures (keeping hot dishes hot, etc).
On the first World Food Safety Day, let’s take a moment to think about something we tend to take for granted!
